Newburyport, MA — Raymond Earle Downer, 71, of Newburyport, formerly of Byfield, died suddenly on Saturday afternoon at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. He was the beloved husband of almost 50 years of Marjorie M. (Milton) Downer.
One of five children of the late Allen and Dorothy (Steele) Downer, Ray was born in Newburyport on July 26, 1942.
He was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1960. Shortly after graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving from September 30, 1960, until his honorable discharge on September 29, 1962.
Throughout his lifetime, he worked as an auto mechanic, fulfilling his passion for working on all sorts of cars, and was an honorary member of the Newburyport Corvette Club. He was also a lifetime member of the Neptunes VFA.
A hardworking man, he was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors and friends with whatever needed to be done. He was devoted to his family, and was a true friend to many.
In addition to his wife, Marjorie, of Newburyport, he is survived by his son, Eric Downer and wife, Dawn, of Northwood, N.H.; his two daughters, Lori Homkowicz and husband, Daniel, of Kingston, N.H., and Cindy True of Seabrook, N.H.; his three grandchildren, Sergei, Devin and Amanda; his brother, John Downer of Las Vegas, Nev.; his sister, Dorothy Root of Worcester; two nieces, a nephew and cousins; and dear friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Allen Downer.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, will be on Wednesday, April 16, from 5 to 7 p.m., immediately followed by services at 7 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
