Newburyport, MA — John Crawshaw, 87, lifelong Newburyport resident, died on Thursday morning at Port Healthcare Center in Newburyport, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife, V. Marie (FitzGerald) Crawshaw, who died June 8, 2007.
Born in Newburyport on February 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Judge Edward Eugene Crawshaw Sr. and Alice Gertrude (Conway) Crawshaw. He attended Newburyport schools.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy from March 14, 1945, until his honorable discharge on August 27, 1946, with the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class. He was the recipient of the World War II Victor Medal, the American Area Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal.
Mr. Crawshaw was the service manager for FitzGerald Pontiac-Oldsmobile in Newburyport until the dealership closed. As a meticulous craftsman, after his years at the dealership, he began his own business in restoration, repair and maintenance of apartments in the local area.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Edward E. Crawshaw Jr., William Crawshaw and James Crawshaw. His survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and George I. French of St. Simons Island, Ga.; his sons, J. Robert Crawshaw and wife, Rebecca, of Exeter, N.H., and Eugene P. Crawshaw and wife, Julie Chu of St. Paul, Minn. He leaves four grandchildren, Andrew P. Crawshaw of Seattle, Wash., Kyle J. Crawshaw of Boston, Moira R. Crawshaw and Ian R. Crawshaw of St. Paul; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside service for family and friends will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newburyport, at a later date to be announced by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.
