East Kingston, NH — Charlotte E. Hughes, 100, of East Kingston, N.H., died on May 2, 2014, at Brigham Manor Nursing Home, Newburyport, Mass.
She was born on November 20, 1913 in Beverly, Mass., and was the daughter of the late Bailey and Charlotte Afton (MacLean) Herndon.
Charlotte grew up in Beverly, Mass., and was a graduate of Beverly High School. At age 29, she married Daniel Hughes. She lived in Hamilton, Mass., for 25 years where she worked as head librarian for 12 years. After retirement, she moved to Salisbury, N.H., from 1980 to 2003, where she was Trustee of trusts. Charlotte then moved to Brentwood, N.H., for a time with her son, Daniel, and later moved to East Kingston with her daughter, Sally.
With her husband, Charlotte greatly enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, and hiking with their children. She was an avid gardener, reader, rug hooker, and quilter, and was also a member of Martha’s Circle Quilting Group of New London. She made a quilt for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hughes was predeceased by her husband, Daniel E. Hughes Sr.; her son, Daniel E. Hughes Jr.; her sister, Betty Bartlett; and two brothers, “Brud” Herndon and John Herndon.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte “Cece” E. Black of Wewoka, Okla.;, daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Denis Hamel of East Kingston; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, James Herndon of Madbury, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews, and their children.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held on May 17, at 9 a.m., at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Graveside services will follow on May 17, at 12 p.m., at the Maplewood Cemetery, Salisbury.
