Plantation, FL — Susan Jean Lane, age 56, of Plantation, Fla., and beloved kindergarten teacher, died peacefully at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, Wednesday, July 10, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Newburyport, January 1, 1957, she was the daughter of Arlen I. (Ryan) Lane of Newburyport and the late Gilbert Lane. She was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1975. As an exceptionally bright student with high scholastic ability in the sciences, Sue was one of 17 high school students selected to spend a summer on the Mississippi Gulf Coast studying the “interactions of the various sciences in environmental endeavors and the balancing of urban development in the coastal zone.” Her desire to learn and excel continued as she went on to graduate from Salem State College, followed by receiving her Master’s degree in education from Nova University in Florida.
She pursued a lifelong, rewarding career as a kindergarten teacher at the Charles D. Wyche, Jr. Elementary School in Miami Lakes, Fla. Her caring devotion to her “little ones” endeared her not only to her “little charges” but also to their parents and the school faculty.
Susan returned to Newburyport at her mother’s request, so that she could be lovingly taken care of by her Mom and family in the last stages in her battle with caner.
In addition to her mother, Susan leaves her only sister, Judith M. Lane of Revere, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever cherish and be grateful for the “gift of her life.” She was predeceased by her brother, Charles W. Smith, Jr.
