Eleanor A. (Gilmore) Cook


Amesbury, MA — Eleanor A. (Gilmore) Cook, age 83, longtime Amesbury resident, died peacefully on Sunday evening, November 25, 2012 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport surrounded by her cherished family.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Bernard H. and Loretta (O’Donnell) Gilmore. Eleanor graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1951 with a B.S. in Home Economics.

A lifelong educator, Eleanor was a home extension agent for Penn State University from 1951 until her marriage to Ed in 1954. While raising a family, she taught evening courses in early American crafts and later became director of Adult Education at the Essex Agricultural and Technical Institute. During the summer, she also taught at the Fletcher Farm Crafts School in Vermont.

Eleanor had a lifelong enthusiasm for the outdoors and spent many summers driving her children to campsites from Cape Cod to the White Mountains in her own converted school bus with all-weather sleeping space for everyone. In 1978, Eleanor and her husband Ed, bought the Battis Dairy Farm in Amesbury and begin the process of building the business now known as Cider Hill Farm. In 1991 Eleanor retired from her position at the Aggie to devote full time to the expanding farm store and bakery operations at Cider Hill Farm.

In addition to her beloved husband of 58 years, Edward J. Cook of Amesbury, she leaves behind her four sons, Brian and wife Kathy of Kensington, NH; Glenn and wife Karen of Amesbury; Edward and wife Sylvia of Bryan, TX and Steven and wife Alison of Plum Island; her three daughters, Chris and husband Paul of Glenn Dale, MD; Kerry and husband Daniel of Monroe, CT., and Kathy and husband Matthew of Woodsboro, TX; fifteen grandchildren who loved her deeply; her sister, Celestine of Melbourne, FL along with many dear friends.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury will be Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 6 to 8 P.M. A funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Church of the Holy Family Parish, 2 School Street, Amesbury. Interment will be private. By request of the family, kindly omit flowers. Instead, donations in Eleanor’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
