Byfield — Arthur L. Buckley, Sr., age 79, of Byfield, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his family home on Sunday morning. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth R. (Jackman) Buckley.
Born in Newburyport, September 23, 1933, he was one of twelve children of the late Timothy A. and Nellie (Dow) Buckley. Mr. Buckley was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving with the United States Army from December 31, 1951 until his honorable discharge on December 19, 1955.
He was a long time employee of The First National Supermarket chain, and a Byfield resident for more than 50 years. Arthur loved building things, especially birdhouses and working in his yard. He enjoyed playing Bingo, Keno and cards with his family.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by three sons, Arthur L. Buckley, Jr. of Amesbury; John Buckley and wife, Bonnie of Merrimac and Timothy Buckley of Byfield; two daughters, Rosemary Lane and husband, James of New Durham, N.H. and Donna L. Lovasco and husband, Paul of Byfield; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two brothers, William of Newburyport and James of Newbury; four sisters, Joyce Sowder of Seabrook, N.H.; Carolyn Levesque of Amesbury; Rena Arnold of Newburyport and Ruth Hoyle of Dover, N.H.; along with several generations of nieces and nephews. He will be missed by them all.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport will be Friday, December 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. A “Celebration of Life” gathering for family and friends will be held Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Buckley residence, 37 South Street, Byfield. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Newbury will be at a later date. It is requested that flowers kindly be omitted, instead, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 40 Water Street, Newburyport, MA 01950.
