Newburyport — Anne L. (Otten) Costello, 81, beloved daughter, wife, mother, and friend, passed peacefully, in the company of family, at her home on Friday May 23, 2014. Anne was born in New York, N.Y. April 30, 1933 daughter of the late Brig. General William C. and Carolyn C. (Wohlow) Otten. After her mother’s passing, she became the stepdaughter of Billie Jean Otten. She married the late Vincent “Mickey” Costello in 1959, soon to be blessed with two lovely daughters, Simantha and Kim.
In life, Anne was known for her creative passion, adventuresome spirit and zest for life. A lover of the arts she graduated with Master's from Columbia University and The University of New Hampshire, and had a fulfilling career teaching art. Above all else, the purest expression of Anne’s spirit could be found in her art work and well tended friendships.
A teacher until the very end she will be missed for her unconditional love of life and her unquenchable thirst for learning and teaching.
Anne is survived by her two children, Simantha (Costello) MacLeod of Newburyport, Kim (Costello) Lesko and her husband, Jim of Gloucester; her brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Marion Costello of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and truly special friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you commit a random act of kindness on behalf of Anne: buy a child an ice cream cone, place a flag on a veteran's grave or shovel the steps of an aging neighbor.
ARRANGEMENTS: A celebration of Anne’s life will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the 1640 Hart House, Linebrook Road, Ipswich. A private burial will be held at a later date. To leave a condolence, please visit www.whittier-porter.com.
