Edmund John McLaughlin, age 94, lifelong Amesbury resident, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at Maplewood Care & Rehab Center in Amesbury. He was the beloved husband of the late Persis (Sargent) McLaughlin.
Son of the late Hugh M. and Mary (McGuire) McLaughlin, he was born in Amesbury, January 4, 1918 and was a graduate of Amesbury High School,. Class of 1937, where he had been the Captain of the High School Football Team in his senior year.
A proud veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in the Pacific Theater, , he was honorably discharged on January 20, 1946. Mr. McLaughlin was a tool and dye maker at General Electric in Lynn, working in their Aircraft Engine Group until his retirement after 38 years.
Edmund was an active player of softball and ice hockey and his love of sports lead him to become involved with youth sports as a coach and umpire in Little League Baseball. He was also an avid follower of all Boston College football and basketball games and supporter of the Boston College Sports Boosters Club.
His survivors include his three children, Joyce Bolduc of NH; Edmund McLaughlin, Jr. of AL and Hugh McLaughlin of Amesbury; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly. The family extends their heartfelt thanks for the kindness and care given by the nurses at Maplewood during Edmund's stay at the nursing home.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 A.M. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury with an hour of visitation from 9 to 10 A.M. immediately prior to the service. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Sol Amor Hospice, 161 South Main Street, Suite 209, Middleton, MA 01949.
