Newburyport, MA — Helen M. ( Magyar) Nelson, 90, of Newburyport, died peacefully on Thursday, June 27, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, following a brief illness. Born in Imlaystown, N.J., Helen was the daughter of George and Anna Magyar, and was a graduate of West Orange High School, N.J.
Helen became a diploma nurse (R.N) during WWII, was a member of the Army Nursing Corps, and later went on to enjoy a career in nursing that spanned 50 years, primarily as an emergency room nurses supervisor. She was also a participant in the Framingham Nurses Study.
Helen enjoyed gardening, knitting and reading, and after moving to Newburyport became active in the Council on Aging Book Club, the Knitting for Newborns volunteers for the Seacoast Birth Center at Anna Jacques Hospital, and enjoyed aquatic exercise at the YWCA.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Richard A. Nelson Sr., in March, 2012. She is survived and remembered with much love by her son, Richard Nelson Jr. and wife, Elizabeth of Ipswich; daughter, Susan E. Nelson and husband, Steve Paulson of Lenore, Idaho; granddaughters, Deirdre S. Kerr of Van Nuys, Calif., and Amelia G. Hess of Sandpoint, Idaho; great-granddaughter, Serena Bernheisel of Sandpoint, her sister and brother-in-law, Aula and Jack Evans of Sunderland, Vt.; sister-in-law, Ruth Randall of Bennington, Vt.; half-sister, Amelia Rice of Acapulco; and numerous nephews, nieces, and their families.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are invited to attend Helen’s memorial service on Tuesday, July 2, at 4 p.m., at the Old South United Presbyterian Church, Federal St., Newburyport. Gathering will begin at 3:30 p.m. Internment will be private for the family and there will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen’s name to Friends of the Newburyport Council on Aging, P.O. Box 550, Newburyport, MA 01950.
