Salisbury, MA — Richard B. Merrill Sr., 78, of Salisbury, MA, died January 28, 2014, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, MA. Richard was born on July 26, 1935, in Newburyport, to the late Charles T. and Ethel M. (Littlefield) Merrill. He graduated from Salisbury public school and then entered the United States Navy where he served for five years on the U.S.S. Stoddard in the Mediterranean. After Richard left the Navy he worked as a Fire Fighter and Forest Ranger at the Bradley Palmer Forest State Park in Topsfield, MA and later at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was a Special Police Officer with the town of Salisbury. Richard was a loving and devoted family man who took great interest in the athletic and academic achievements of his grandchildren. He also loved playing cards and watching local professional teams play.

Richard is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Barbara (Campbell) Merrill of Salisbury; children, Linda McNeil and husband, Dan, of Salisbury, MA, Richard B. Merrill Jr. and wife, Theresa, of Merrimac, MA, Michelle Freeman and husband, David, of Newburyport, MA, Charles M. Merrill of Salisbury, MA, Jeannie Merrill and partner, Carl Martin, of Amesbury, MA, Jeffrey S. Merrill and partner, Keith Beardsley, of Boston, MA, Rhonda Griffin and husband, Patrick, of Salisbury, MA, Mable Lewis and husband, Kevin, of Seabrook, NH, Wendy Merrill and partner, Rick Whitney, of Haverhill, MA and Chad Merrill and wife, Deana, of Merrimac, MA. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews including Georgiana Fazio and husband, Frank, of Georgetown and Patricia Gilman and husband, Jeff, of Gardner, Maine and his sister, Joanne (Merrill) Newcomer of Kittery, Maine. Richard was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Lorraine Merrill.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc and Conte Funeral Home, 193 High Street, Newburyport, MA 01950. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, 10 a.m. at the East Parish Methodist Church, 8 Lafayette Rd., Salisbury, MA 01952.

A spring burial is scheduled at Long Hill Cemetery in Salisbury.
