Newburyport, MA — Carol Ann (Furlong) Young, age 86, of Newburyport, died Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Anna Jaques Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Howard Young, who died December 27, 2002.
Carol Ann Young was born June 20, 1927, in Newburyport, MA, to Lestina (Noyes) Furlong and James Walter Furlong. Carol attended Tufts University, from which she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in History. She continued her studies at the University of Tennessee, from which she earned a Masters Degree in American History.
Following graduate school, she returned to Massachusetts where she married Kenneth Young. They lived in Andover, MA where they raised their children, Meredith (Young) Chmura and Leonard Young. Carol was an active volunteer in the community. Among her most rewarding projects were comforting children with special needs (to provide respite to their parents) and promoting a lifelong love of literature through the Great Books program at Andover Junior High School. She was an avid seamstress and gardener. Carol enjoyed sharing her skills with others, through her work at Berke’s Fabric Shop and with the occasional impromptu alteration for a friend’s special event.
After Kenneth’s retirement, Carol returned to the family home in Newburyport, where Carol and Ken enjoyed birding and hiking on Plum Island. Carol appreciated the support of the local community and made weekly trips to Leighton’s Bakery for bread and special treats. After the closing of Leighton’s, Greta’s Grains kindly made weekly deliveries to brighten the Young family mornings.
Carol is survived by her children, Meredith and Leonard; by her son-in-law, John Chmura; by cousin, Steve Furlong; her longtime friend and aide, Bette Spohr and other friends and relatives in the Newburyport area and points beyond.
