Merrimac, MA — Charlie O. Haynes, 77, longtime Merrimac resident, died on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at Anna Jaques Hospital, after a period of decling health. He was the devoted husband of the late Helen L. (Bassani) Haynes, who died August 6, 1993.
Born in Merrimac on October 26, 1936, he was one of three children of the late Clarence H. and Rachel Lasca (Bent) Haynes, and had attended Merrimac schools.
For many years, Charlie worked for the Town of Merrimac Cemetery Department.
Some of Charlie’s favorite pastimes were listening to country music, doing puzzles, watching the weather channel, and game show networks, karaoke (especially “White Sports Coat), camping, and his all-time favorite was driving. He always had a relatively new car, and for many years, accompanied by beloved canine spaniel friends, he would just get in his car and drive, with no specific destination in mind - just for the fun of it!
Predeceased by his brother, Clarence Jr., and his sister, Aloma Dow; he leaves behind a dear friend, Kelly Poor of Merrimac; and many acquaintances who will always remember him as a very kind, caring individual with a special sense of humor.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac. Springtime burial in Locust Grove Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the MSPCA, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
