Newburyport, MA — Mary C. (Branagan) Coutu of Bromfield Street, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Anna Jaques Hospital. She was the daughter of Vincent Branagan and Catherine (McCarthy) Branagan, and wife of the late Walter H. Coutu, Sr.
Mary was born on August 25, 1924, in Wellesley, Mass., and graduated from Natick High School in 1942. As an adult, she was a dedicated and adored mother of four children, Cathy Pantanella and Raymond Coutu, of Newburyport, Denise Kelly of, Stow, Mass., and the late Walter H. Coutu, Jr. She was also an active community member, volunteering her time to many organizations over the course of her life, including Perkins School for the Blind, the Acton Senior Center, the Boy Scouts of America, Suburban Manor Nursing Home, and the Emma Andrews Branch Library.
In addition to her children, Mary leaves nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her brother, Lawrence J. Branagan, of Natick, Mass. She will be sorely missed by them, as well as many friends from places near and far, including Danielsville, Ga., where she resided in the final years of her husband’s life.
ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be at Twomey/LeBlanc and Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA, April 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. A memorial service for Mary will be held at Twomey/LeBlanc and Conte on April 27, at 10 a.m., followed by burial at Glenwood Cemetery in South Natick, Mass., at 1 p.m. Mary’s family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Anna Jaques for their care and compassion.
