Exeter, NH — Dorothy L. Mathews, longtime Merrimac resident, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at the Winnisquam Lodge at Riverwoods in Exeter, N.H. She was the beloved wife of 67 years of David R. Mathews, who predeceased her on June 7, 2013.
Born in Hanover, Mass., on September 23 1926, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Alice (Cook) Olsen. She was a graduate of Brockton High School Brockton, Mass. Upon graduation, she attended nursing school in Boston. She also worked as a civilian draftsman at MIT for the military during WWII. Dottie met her husband, Dave, after his discharge from the U.S. Navy, and they were married in Lynn, Mass., in July of 1946
In 1947, she and her late husband, Dave, helped his sister, Dorothy, and brother-in-law, Skip Meadows, open Skip’s Snack Bar in Merrimac. Dave and Dottie purchased Skip’s in the 1950s, and continued to operate the business until their retirement in 2002. The business is now being carried forward by daughter, Lori, and her husband, Rob.
She will be remembered fondly as a loving mother and wife, working in partnership with her husband of 67 years. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Mathews of Newton, N.H., and Lori Mathews and husband, Robert Stepanian of Merrimac; along with several generations of nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and fond acquaintances around the world.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be will be held Tuesday, August 13, at 11 a.m., at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac, followed by interment at Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac.
