Seabrook, NH — On Tuesday, August 13, 2013, the family of Florence I. Shields faced a mountain on their own they cannot climb. But they are standing on the promise that God will never leave them and God will always see them through. Jesus came and ushered Florence into heaven surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Salisbury, Mass., July 29, 1919, a daughter of the late Daryl and Joanna (Knowles) Downs.
Mrs. Shields lived her life mostly in Salisbury, Mass., and Seabrook and in her later years, loved her winters in Florida. She was employed for over 10 years with Henschel, Inc. of Amesbury, Mass., and also worked for C.B.S. Hytron of Newburyport, Mass., for many years.
Florence volunteered her time teaching Sunday school at the Georgetown Baptist Church, Georgetown, Mass., and attended the Assembly of God Church, in both Exeter and Newburyport. For many years she held the Good News Club for children at her home.
Florence had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful smile. She enjoyed life and was a joy to everyone who knew her. She was a great cook who never prepared a bad meal. She thought nothing of packing all her children and all the neighbors' children into one car and spending all day down at the beach. She was very, very proud of her children and their many accomplishments.
She leaves her son, Charles McLaughlin, owner of Shamrock Paving, and his wife, Rena, of Seabrook; five daughters, Lois Toleman of Ft. Myers, Fla., Joanna McLaughlin of Seabrook, Norma Dewhurst and her husband, David, of Forest, Va., Patricia Perkins of Bradenton, Fla., Pamela Hutchinson and her husband, Roy, of Ligonier, Pa.; her brother, Arnold Downs of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren, Sheila Frost Resendes, the joys of her life; dogs, Raku, Logan and Chalee and her special love, cat, Marcie; many nieces and nephews and many fresh air kids she supported.
She was predeceased by her husbands, John McLaughlin, Arthur Simard and William J. Shields; her granddaughter, Marcy Klus and her sister, Glennis Nobrega.
