Gary Kraus, 78

Mount Dora, FL — Dr. Gary W. Kraus, 78, of Mount Dora, Fla., and formerly of Boxford, Mass., died suddenly in New York City on Sunday, June 30. He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Linda, and his cherished sons, Kevin and his husband, Scott Stachowiak, of Long Island City, N.Y., Eric and his wife, Christine, of Walpole, Mass., and Christopher and his wife, Joanne, of Miami, Fla. He was the proud grandfather of four adored grandsons, Timothy, Logan, Ryan, and Bryan. He also leaves his brothers, Leslie Schwartz of Juno Beach, Fla., and Richard Schwartz of New York City.

The son of the late Aileen Schwartz and Mirabeau “Mickey” Kraus, Dr. Kraus was born on May 1, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1957, and from its School of Medicine in 1961. He completed his residency in Obstetrics-Gynecology at University Hospitals in Cleveland in 1966, and then served as a Captain in the U.S. Army at its hospital in Fort Devens, Mass., where he became chief of the OB-GYN service.

After military duty, he joined the staff of Hale Hospital, Haverhill, Mass, where he practiced from 1968 to 1990, and Anna Jacques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass., where he served as medical director from 1968 to 2003. He was a founding partner of Women’s Health Care, a large OB-GYN practice in New England.

He was on the staff of New England Baptist Hospital in Boston from 2003 to 2007. Following his move to Florida in 2007, he was affiliated with Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares, and several clinics. He was a practicing physician until his death.

Dr. Kraus was an active member of many professional associations, consulted on a variety of peer review boards, and was a primary investigator in pharmaceutical/clinical research. He was loved and respected by his many friends and colleagues, and by his patients, for whom he cared very deeply. Throughout his career, he took great personal satisfaction in the safe delivery of more than 4,000 babies.
