William E. Adams

Groveland — William E. “Bill” Adams, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on March 22, 2014. He was the husband of Virginia (Horton) Adams.

Born in Haverhill on September 14, 1924, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Helen E. (Hutchinson) Adams.

Bill graduated from St. Petersburg High School in Florida. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida, where he excelled at several sports, and the school retired his football number in recognition of his gridiron success. He then entered the U.S. Air Force and rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Bill returned to school and earned his master's degree in industrial engineering from Northeastern University. He enjoyed a long and successful engineering career at Bell Telephone Laboratories that provided him the opportunity to travel with his wife to such places as China.

Bill was very civic minded and returned much to his community. He was a member of the Pentucket School Scholarship Committee, Groveland School Committee, member of the Groveland Finance Board, the Groveland Congregational Church, and was trustee and president, of Elmwood Cemetery. He was an active member of the Haverhill Rotary Club, where he embodied the motto of “Service Above Self.” Bill joined the club in 1977, and his membership spanned 37 years. During this time, Bill was president from 1985 to 1986, received the first of two Paul Harris Fellows in 1988, and was District Governor from 1988 to 1989.

The last of six children, Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia; his children, Todd Adams of Woodsville, N.H., and Paige O’Connell and husband, Jim, of Haverhill; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Sally Adams.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral on Friday, March 28, at 10 a.m., at Groveland Congregational Church. Calling hours at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill, will be on Thursday, from 3 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
