Iora Jane Alexander, 80, of Salisbury, MA, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. She was born April 23, 1931, the daughter of the late Sophia and Orlo Milton Crannell, formerly of Malden.
She was a 1949 graduate of Malden High. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a Masters of Education and Guidance from Rhode Island College. She earned a certificate in School Administration from Boston College. Ms. Alexander spent three decades of her life working in education. She taught sixth grade in Newton, MA, at the beginning of her career from 1954 – 1957. She resumed her career in education in 1968, as a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator for the Andover School System after raising her four children. She was principal of the Bancroft School from 1984 - 1991, when she retired.
Active in community affairs, Ms. Alexander served on the Conservation Commission, the Salisbury Community Development Planning Committee and the Zoning Development Committee. She also worked as a volunteer for 11 years at the Society for the Development of the Arts, the Custom House Maritime Museum and the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. While teaching, she served as a member of the board of directors for the Andover Federal Credit Union for 20 years.
She was a travel enthusiast and felt that her life was enriched by friendships around the world. Ms. Alexander greatly valued the many opportunities she had to learn about various cultures and appreciated the beauty and accomplishments of the world at large.
She is survived by her sons, Steven and his wife Mary Beth of Abington, David and his wife Pamela of Naples, FL, William of Methuen and his former wife Theresa of Andover, daughter, Lisa of Salisbury and grandchildren, Charles and his wife Carolynn, Katherine, John, Audra, Jaclyn, Kimberly and Brian and 2 great-grandsons. Ms Alexander was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Newcomb Hunter (1994) and her former husband, Douglas H. Alexander (2002).
ARRANGEMENTS: A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. at West Parish Church, Andover. Burial will be private at West Parish Garden Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Iora’s sister to the Hospice of North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923 or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, 2nd floor, Bethesda, Maryland 20814, for all the wonderful work they do for children.
