Plaistow, NH — Alice H. (Bowie) Baumgartner, most recently of Plaistow, N.H., passed away peacefully Thursday morning, April 4, 2013, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Matthew Sickel of Plaistow, surrounded by the family she so cherished.
She was born in North Weare, N.H., on December 29, 1925, to Wilfred I. and Bernice C. (Phelps) Bowie. At an early age, she was moved to Arlington, Mass., to live with, and later be adopted by, her uncle and aunt, Alfred E. Bowie and Maggie M. (Archie) Bowie. She attended Arlington schools, graduating from Arlington High School in 1943, then went on to receive her B.A. degree from Providence-Barrington Bible College and a Masters in Education from Northeastern University. Her career in education spanned 32 years, teaching in Brownville Junction, Maine, Newburyport, Tewksbury and ending her career after 18 years at Amesbury High School.
She was active in local church ministries throughout her life, chiefly in Sunday School and Missions. She was an avid reader and liked nothing better than to sit down with a good book. She enjoyed writing cards and encouraging notes to friends and people going through difficult situations, as well as telling meaningful stories to small groups, such as the Senior Ministry which she and her husband organized and led for several years.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Charles P. “Phil” Baumgartner, Jr., on September 2, 2012, she was also predeceased by her seven siblings, Barbara and Bradford, both of whom she never knew, Deborah, Howard, James, Louise Lethbridge and Stanley. B. and wife, Michelle Forte of S. Wakefield, N.H., and Lisa Sickel and husband, Matthew of Plaistow, N.H.; her grandchildren, Darra Hotopp, Dayna Baumgartner and fiancee, Miguel Colon, Daniel Baumgartner and wife, Melissa, Derek Baumgartner, Ian Denault, and Britny, Mercedes and Summer Adjutant; one step-grandson, Robert Dragone and his wife, Audrey; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jean Bowie of Michigan; along with several generations of nieces and nephews and many wonderful and special friends.
