Newburyport — Steven Thomas Stellmach of Newburyport, 55, died after a brief battle with lung cancer, Wednesday afternoon, May 29, 2013, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, surrounded by his family.
Born in Plainfield, N.J., October 11, 1957, he was one of eight children of the late Stanley T. and Doris M. (Cronin) Stellmach and grew up in Colonia New Jersey. After settling in Byfield, Steve graduated from Whittier Vocational Technical High School in 1976 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country from May 2, 1977, until his honorable discharge on April 30, 1981.
For many years he worked as both a welder and stone mason, with a craftsmanship that was beyond compare. He was a longtime member of the North End Boat Club of Newburyport and the Neptunes.
His survivors include a daughter, Jessica Smith Stellmach of Orleans; a grandson, Damien of Orleans; five brothers, Thomas of Northport, Fla.; William of Colonia, N.J.; Robert of Toms River, N.J.; Andrew of Amesbury and Daniel of Beaufort, N.C.; a sister, Theresa Gregory of Griswold, Conn.; along with numerous nieces and nephews and many, many good friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Ann Hatfield of Bellingham, Wash.
