Amesbury, MA — Esther M Carrigan, 93, lifelong Amesbury resident, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, August 23, 2013, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, with her loving family at her side.
Born in Amesbury on May 16, 1920, she was one of 11 children of the late George and Minnie (Hatch) Mercer, and the youngest of their six daughters. She was married to her late husband, Alexander J. Carrigan, for 64 years.
Esther was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1938. During World War II, she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard escorting visitors through the facility. Esther worked at the Provident Bank in Amesbury for 25 years, retiring in 1984. Esther served as the Provident Bank’s first woman assistant treasurer and corporator.
Those who knew her will always remember Esther as a warm and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She brought a smile, warmth and cheer to all she touched.
She is survived by her son, John, and his wife, Susan Darbyshire; her son, George; her grandson, Scott ,and his wife, Kristie, and their children, Alex and Avery; her granddaughter, Heather, and her children TJ, Brit and Paul; her youngest brother, Dick Mercer of Kittery, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews of the Mercer clan and their children. She was predeceased by her beloved youngest son, Denny; brothers, Charlie, George, Robert, and Danny; and her sisters, Gertrude, Ruth, Marjorie, Minnie, and Barbara.
ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside service for family and friends will be held August 29, at 11 a.m., at Mount Prospect Cemetery on Elm Street, Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Esther and her beloved son, Denny, to the Globe Santa Fund, c/o Citizens Bank, P.O.
