BYFIELD — Lawrence Lakin Jones, Jr., 81, a fifty-year resident of Byfield, passed away early Sunday morning, October 14, at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. He was the husband of Rosalie "Lee" (Fairman) Jones, to whom he had been married for 61 years.
Larry was born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico on November 19, 1930, the son of the late Lawrence L. Sr. and Mary (Ingraham) Jones.
He attended the Beverly School system, Cushing Academy, and the University of Massachusetts.
During his professional life, he was he was employed as a Boy Scout executive, a salesperson, owner of the Blackhawk Trucking Company and Jones Motor Service of Byfield.
His favorite pastimes included skiing, horseback riding, driving a big rig, and woodworking. He was a master at turning wood on a lathe.
In addition to his wife Lee, he is survived by their children, sons, Stephen T. Jones of Merrimac, Lawrence Lakin Jones III of Wilmington, Del., and Andrew Fairman Jones of Lee, N.H.; also daughters, Jennifer Baldwin-Schaffer of LI, N.Y. and Elizabeth Jones Burgess of Rockport, Maine. He was guardian for his grandson, Matthew A. Jones of Groveland. He leaves his sisters, Anita Holmquist of Raymond, Maine and Margo Jones of Beverly; 17 other grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Forster Jones of Newburyport and a brother, Edward Jones of Hopkinton, N.H.
