Rye, NH — Mary E. (Corliss) Woods, 86, died on Monday, August 19, 2013 at Webster of Rye.
She was born in Newburyport, Mass., on June 7, 1927, and was a daughter of the late James J. and Grace (Meehan) Corliss.
Mary was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1945. After graduation, she entered the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, and taught foreign languages in various schools of the Archdiocese of Boston under the name of Sister Thomas Aquinas. Mary received her bachelor’s degree from Regis College, her master's from Providence College, and many more credits from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. and the New England Classical Institute at Tufts University.
Mary was an active member of the Saint Theresa Parish of Rye and contributed her talents and her great love of the Lord as a Eucharistic Minister. She served in this ministry for 13 years, and considered the distribution of the Holy Eucharist to the sick and disabled a very special privilege. She could always be counted upon to actively contribute her assistance in the preparation of bereavement luncheons.
She was a lifelong and highly knowledgeable Red Sox fan, whose successes and failures she could recall and comment upon years after they occurred.
She is survived by her sisters, Jane Hovey of Boston, and Kathryn Roth and her husband, Dr. Irwin Roth of Chatham, Mass.; and by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gerald T. Woods.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, August 23, in the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Rd., Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, at the St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Rd., Rye Beach. Burial will be in St. Josephs Cemetery, Amesbury.
