Newburyport, MA — Leon A. Gurczak, age 88, lifelong resident of Newburyport, passed peacefully Thursday morning, November 14, 2013, at Country Center in Newburyport. He was the devoted husband of the late Olga E. (Barbick) Gurczak, who died in 1996.
Born in Newburyport, April 1, 1925, he was one of four children of the late Andrew and Catharina (Stolarski) Gurczak and had attended Newbury schools.
Leon worked as a machinist for the Bailey Corporation in Seabrook, New Hampshire until his retirement in 1987.
He enjoyed fishing and in his retirement, he and his wife, Olga, became avid Flea Market followers.
Not having had any children of his own, he considered his nieces and nephews and their children like his own children and grandchildren. He felt blessed to have them in his life.
Predeceased by his two brothers and his sister, Alexander, Stephen and Cecelia Gurczak, he is survived by his nieces and nephews, including William Gurczak and wife, Frances, of Newburyport, his sister-in-law, Jennie Kerkian of Newburyport, along with many grandnieces and grandnephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside service for family and friends will be held Saturday at 10 A.M. at St. Mary’s cemetery, Newburyport. By request of the family, there will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Richard A. Eaton Charitable Foundation, c/o Newburyport Bank, 63 State Street, Newburyport, MA 01950.
