Staten Island, NY — Rae N. Wasserman, daughter of the late Eli and Rebecca Naidus, devoted sister of the late Dorothy Naidus, beloved wife of the late Jacob M. Wish, Gilbert Wasserman and Ben Weintraub, much-loved mother of Rebecca Wish Esche (Jeff), Steven Wasserman (Laurie), Ira Wasserman (Sue Lob) and Jacki Wish Gilbert, adored grandmother of Christoph Eli Gelfand (Katie Riley) and Gil Lob Wasserman, died peacefully on June 7, 2013, at age 90, with family by her side. Rae is also survived by two stepdaughters, Josy Ingersoll and Kathy Puckett; four step-grandchildren, Jamie and Michael Diener; Tad and Cassidy Puckett; and several step-great-grandchildren.
Teacher, activist, and loyal friend, Rae was a courageous, passionate woman who lived a full, rich life. She loved to cook and was known for her lasagna and Bailey’s Irish Cream cheesecake, among other tasty items. Among her many pleasures were entertaining friends and family, and traveling the world – some of the places she visited were China, Siberia, the Canary Islands, Europe, and Bulgaria. She had a radiant smile. One of her loveliest traits, passed on to her children, was her willingness to laugh at herself.
Following in her father's footsteps, gardening brought her much pleasure.
An enthusiastic folk dancer, Rae also loved art, poetry, literature, classical music, and theatre. She was a fervent political activist who marched on Washington until her 70’s, believing in equal rights for all and always working for a peaceful solution to the troubles of the world.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service for Rae will be held on Sunday, September 22, at the Unitarian Church of Staten Island.
