Newburyport — Irma I. (Chouinard) Holmes, 98, a lifelong resident of Newburyport, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014. She was born and raised in Newburyport to the late Henry and Mary (Turcotte) Chouinard. Irma was raised in "Joppa" and attended the "French School" and belonged to the French Church until its closure. She was a 1934 graduate of Newburyport High School and then went on to the Wilford School of Cosmetology, Class of 1935. Irma owned and operated Chouinard Beauty Salon in Newburyport for 30 years and was a past president of the Newburyport Hairdresser Association. During her spare time, Irma was involved in many clubs and organizations. She was an avid reader, a New England sports fan, and a member of Red Sox Nation.
Irma married her High School Sweetheart, Howard S. Holmes, whom passed away in 1987. She is survived by her children, John Holmes and his wife, Margaret, Jane Twomey, Nancy O'Brien and her husband, Daniel, Gregg Holmes and his wife, Lynne, and Walter Holmes. She was the grandmother of 9 and great-grandmother of 11. She is also survived by her brother, Robert "Boots" Chouinard; her sister, Anita Shaw and many nieces, nephews and special people. Irma was predeceased by her siblings, Lionel Chouinard, Cecelia Niergarth, Eleanor Murphy, Muriel Morrill and Alberta Haynes; her granddaughter, Amanda Holmes and her son-in-law, G. Michael Twomey. The sparkle in her eyes and her devilish grin will be missed by all.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her Memorial Mass on Saturday, April 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 42 Green St., Newburyport.
