Joseph J. Wyka, 92

Groveland, MA — Joseph J. Wyka, 92, of Groveland, died on March 10, 2014, at The Oxford Manor Nursing Home in Haverhill, Mass.

Born in Haverhill and raised in educated in Haverhill and Groveland, son of the late John and Florence (Jarosz) Wyka, he graduated from Groveland High School. Mr. Wyka worked as a machinist at Dan-Ro and as a master welder and machinist for G.T.E. Sylvain and later for the Development Plant in Ipswich.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, clamming, and gardening. An accomplish taxidermist, Joseph was known for mounting the thirty pound lobster that is displayed at Brown’s Lobster Pound in Seabrook, N.H. A member of St. John the Baptist Parish, he was the chairman of the Essex County League of Sportsman’s Building at the Topsfield Fair for over 30 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Haverhill Hound, Rod, and Gun Club and an active member of the Plum Island Surfcasters Club and won First Prize in the 2010 Club Tournament Senior Division for the largest bluefish caught.

He was predeceased by his wife, Claire (Hewett) Wyka, and is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Wyka and her fiancé, Walter Fedynyshyn of Groveland, and several nieces and nephews, especially Fred Collins of Groveland. He was predeceased by his brother, Andrew Wyka, and his sister, Victoria Collins.

ARRANGEMENTS: There are no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 9 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Haverhill, MA. A Celebration of Life will take place on May 3, 2014, from 12 to 3 p.m. at PITA Hall, 8 Plum Island Boulevard, Newbury (Plum Island), MA.
