Antonina "Lena" M. (Angelo) Hayes, 82

Newburyport — Antonina “Lena” M. Hayes passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was a lifelong resident of Newburyport and was the daughter of the late Salverio and Maria (Mary) Angelo of Newburyport and wife of the late Leo F. Hayes. She was also the sister of the late Andrew Angelo and the late Salvatore (Sam) Angelo, and grandmother to the late Sarah Gilfus.

Throughout her life, Lena was employed by Towle Silversmiths, Pearson’s Florist, Maycomber Associates and retired from the Rupert A. Nock Middle School. She was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Lena enjoyed the simple things in life and her family and friends meant everything to her. She had many fond memories of family gatherings and spending summers at her cottage on Plum Island. During the past year, Lena has been living at Haverhill Crossings Assisted Living. She loved both the staff and residents and they became her extended family. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Haverhill Crossings for their excellent care and for providing Lena with a comfortable and safe home. She truly enjoyed her home there and we appreciate the staff for providing her with much love and fun.

Lena is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Maria (Hayes) and Raymond Gilfus; her son, Barry Hayes, and fiance, Sue Thibedeau; her grandchildren, Tyler Gilfus, Brandi Hayes and her husband William Bennett, Barry Hayes Jr. and his girlfriend Ashley Porter, and Travis Hayes; and also her dear great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Newburyport. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Twomey - LeBlanc and Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport. To leave online condolences, please visit www.contefuneralhomes.com.

He is survived by his daughter, Judythe Eaton of Ft. Pierce; his son, John G. Buzzell Sr. of Merrimac, Mass.; two sisters, Adrienne Beaulieu and Helena Worthen, both of Amesbury, Mass.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lorenzo and Wilfred Gagne, and one sister, Therese Garneau.

He attended Lowell Technical School for a year before joining the General Electric Co., Lynn as a Planner for 47 years prior to his retirement 4 years ago.

Stanley always said Joan was like his American Express card ...you don't leave home without her. Stanley was born in Newburyport, Mass., son of Lorraine Barbara (Mowrey) Sadowski and Henry T. Sadowski. He leaves behind his three sisters, Sharon and husband, Danie,l Babbin, and Cathy Burnham of Exeter, N.H., and Lynne and husband, Dick Pray, of Barrington, N.H. A brother Thomas and wife Lynda Sadowski of Newburyport, Mass. Stanley was predeceased by his parents and brother, Dean. Stanley also leaves behind his three brothers-in-law, John Rogowski of Hardwick, Mass., Richard and wife, Dottie, Rogowski of Three Rivers, Mass., and Fred Rogowski of Ware, Mass. Stanley was also predeceased by his in-laws, Felix Fred and Monica B. (Skura) Rogowski of Ware. Stanley also leaves behind many nephews; a niece; triplets; two great-nephews; and a great-niece. Stanley attended Newburyport schools, and entered the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served his country for eight years as a law enforcement specialist serving in the Vietnam War, and being exposed to Agent Orange.
