Earl R. Berg

Rowley, MA — Earl Ralph Berg passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on November 14, 2013, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Home in Danvers.

He was the loving husband of Evelyn "Lyn" Berg. Born and raised in Somerville, MA, he was the son of the late Ralph and Evelyn Berg. In addition to his wife of 42 years, he is survived by three children, Joshua (Laura) Berg of Worcester, MA, and their children, Leah, Caleb, and Josiah; Naomi Berg of Wakefield, MA; and Jeremy (Krissy) Berg of Georgetown, MA, and their son, Jacob. He was a special grandpa to Wesley Cochran, son of his friends, Blair and Tina Cochran. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy (Dan) Viamonte of Richardson, TX.

A graduate of Gordon College (BS, 1969) and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (MS, 1972), Earl was a gifted teacher. For 34 years, he taught biology, botany, and zoology at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School where he also coached girls volleyball, basketball, and softball. He mentored education students from Gordon College and Salem State University. He also taught a technology course for undergrads and graduate students at Gordon College, computer classes for the adult education program at Hamilton-Wenham, and several workshops for the Northeast Consortium.

He spent his summers painting houses and after retirement from teaching, painting became his full-time occupation. His life was enriched by the many friendships he developed with his customers.

A longtime member of Hope Community Church, Earl served on the media team, played in the bell choir, and assisted the maintenance team. He was a former member of the Okinawan Karate Do Union, earning a black belt while he instructed young people at the lower levels. He enjoyed playing volleyball at Hope and with the Hamilton-Wenham Recreational League.

His hobbies included gardening, making jams from his berries, peaches, and pears, baking pies, restoring old sports cars, performing magic tricks, watching movies supplied by his friend, Arnie Klayman, spending time with his family, and watercolor painting.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be Monday, November 18, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hope Community Church, Hale Street, Newburyport. Private burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
