Madeleine P. Woodward


Exeter, N.H. — Madeleine P. Woodward, 93, of Riverwoods in Exeter, N.H., beloved wife of 60 years to the late, Rev. Donald R. Woodward and daughter of the late, Ferdinand and Edward O. Proctor, died peacefully March 14 at Exeter Hospital.

She was the loving mother of Gretchen Park of Kensington, Md., Michael Woodward and his wife, Pamela Moore of North Hampton, N.H.; Meredith Colon and her husband Joe Colon of Franklin Square, N.Y., and Christopher Woodward and his wife, Martha Woodward of Chelmsford.

Madeleine was born in Brookline, grew up in Newton and graduated from Radcliffe College. She was a Captain in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1942-1946, serving in the Army Air Force Air Transport Command (ATC). Later in her life, she worked for a social services organization supporting unwed mothers in Kansas City and at the Community Services Society in New York City. Madeleine loved being with her family and friends. She loved vacations and traveling, reading, walking and was active in community and church work. She served on Boards of Education in Vermont and Kansas. At Riverwoods Retirement Community in Exeter, in between games of scrabble and bridge, she was active in several committees. She was the first chairperson of the Resident Council and later served as resident trustee on the Riverwoods Board of Trustees.

In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister, Jaqueline DeBrun and Jeanne Proctor, wife of Madeleine 's brother, the late, Edward O. Proctor, Jr. Madeline had 13 grandchildren, Gavin and Shannon Cotsworth, Christopher Colon, Ethan and Danielle Woodward-Moore, Kevin and Casey Colon, Patrick Woodward-Moore, Rachel and Alex Budd, Daniel Woodward, Alexander Woodward and Michelle Woodward; one great-grandchild, Sutton Cotsworth and many nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: A family service was held March 17 at Christ Episcopal Church, Exeter and a memorial service will be planned for late spring at Grace Church. Donations in her memory may be made to Heifer International.
