Newburyport, MA — Evelyn Margaret (Packer) Erskine died at home surrounded by her family on May 6, 2013, two days after her 92nd birthday.
She was born in Newburyport, May 4, 1921, to the late John and Evelina May (Howarth) Packer. One of eight children, she is predeceased by brothers John, Walter, Howard and Edward Packer; and by sisters Alice Packer, Ruth Packer and Edith (Packer) Lopez. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Robert Erskine, on Christmas day 1942 and had been married for 51 years when he passed away in 1993.
Evelyn lived in Newburyport all of her life with the exception of a year she spent in Newport News, Va., when her husband was stationed there prior to being deployed during WWII. She attended Newburyport Public Schools, graduating from Newburyport High School in 1939. She worked at the Hytron Factory during WWII and then settled in Newburyport to raise her family. She was an active member of the Old South Presbyterian Church in Newburyport.
Evelyn is survived by her four daughters, Jean Karpenko, Diane Martin, Cynthia Bashaw and Sherry Amato; nine grandchildren, Angela Kelewae, Kristina Kingsbury, Heidi Klingebiel, Scott Martin, Jeffrey, Jason and Benjamin Bashaw, and Michael and Alex Amato; and three great-grandchildren, Mikaela, Arianna, and Camden Kelewae.
ARRANGEMENTS: Services will be held at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green St., Newburyport, on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m., followed by burial at the Belleville Cemetery. At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. Either flowers or a donation to the Old South Presbyterian Church, 29 Federal St., Newburyport, MA, 01950, or to the charity of the donor’s choice, would be appreciated.
