Barbara Bailey, 60

KENSINGTON, N.H. — Barbara (Randall) Bailey, age 60, of Kensington, N.H., died after a brief illness on Monday morning, Feb. 14, 2011, at Exeter Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born in Amesbury, Jan. 3, 1951, she was the daughter of Barbara I. (Bailey) Randall of Amesbury and the late Maurice E. Randall, Jr. and was a graduate of Amesbury High School. She held a Bachelors degree from Framingham State College and a Masters from Cambridge College.

Barbara was a brilliant student, and in high school was told that she had the potential to excel in whatever profession she chose. She chose to become an elementary school teacher and worked for 35 years at the Amesbury Elementary and Cashman schools until her retirement in 2008. She taught in an innovative multi-age classroom with Mappy Gray. This arrangement enabled students to spend first and second grade with both Barbara and Mappy where they could develop at their own pace. Barbara was the recipient of the Teacher Excellence Award and she served on numerous committees within the Amesbury Public School system. Since her retirement, Barbara continued working as a math coach with other teachers within the Amesbury schools.

In addition to being a brilliant educator, Barbara was also an avid photographer, artist, quilter and reader. Her photography twice won her recognition in the Boston Globe RAW Photography Competition. Barbara loved the outdoors, and with her husband, skied and traveled extensively. In particular, she enjoyed skiing at Sunday River in Maine and vacationing on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Their ski trips often took them out west, and she particularly loved visiting Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Barbara was a dearly loved "Auntie" to many nieces and nephews, who particularly looked forward to her showing up for family events with a plate of whoopie pies.

In addition to her mother, her survivors include her devoted husband of 37 years, David A. Bailey, coach at the Amesbury High School; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David E. and Christine Randall and Robert S. and Kathy Randall, both of Amesbury; a sister and brother-in-law, Donna Randall and James Haskell of Ipswich; several nieces and nephews who were so dear to her; a very close friend, her co-teacher, Madeline "Mappy" Gray of Salisbury; and all of the students who had the privilege of passing through her door.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours are on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. A memorial service for relatives and friends will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Market Street Baptist Church, Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Barbara Bailey Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Provident Bank, 5 Market St., Amesbury, MA 01913.
