AMESBURY — Stuart W. Barnard, age 89 years, of Amesbury, formerly of Swampscott, and Barefoot Bay, FL, died Friday at the Maplewood Care and Rehabilitation Center in Amesbury after a lengthy illness.
He was the husband of the late Marie A. (Coleman) Barnard, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage. Born in Swampscott, he was the son of the late Leroy and Bessie (Day) Barnard. He attended Swampscott schools, and graduated from Swampscott High School, Class of 1941. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy, during WW II, and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, aboard the USS Beaver, and the USS Umquor. Mr. Barnard was employed at Merrimac Paper Co. as a First Class Fireman and Computer Operator for 38 years until he retired in 1984.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Bass Angler's Sportsman Society, and a former member of the First Congregational Church, Swampscott. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.
He is survived by one son David L and his wife Denise Barnard of Amesbury, MA, four daughters, Shirley A. and her husband Ron Ryan of Peachtree City, GA, Gloria M. and her husband Bill Johnson of Haverhill, MA, Marilyn M. and her husband Paul Fortin of Derry, NH, Barbara D. Chase and her companion Norm Fuller of Fremont, NH, ten grandchildren, Chris and his wife Sherrie Ryan Glastonbury, CT, Scott and his wife Melissa Ryan of Naples, FL, Susan Johnson and her companion Mark Sielicki of Amesbury, MA, Karin and her husband Dave Gagne of Newburyport, MA Danielle Barnard and her companion Bryant Emmons of Warwick, RI, Pamela and her husband Dave Smith of Bethlehem, NH, Jim Barnard of Portsmouth, NH, Michael Fortin of Portsmouth, NH, Jason and his wife Terri Chase of Raymond, NH, Tia and her husband Rick Paul of Plaistow, NH, 19 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Preston, Harvey, Howard, Ray, and Earle Barnard.
ARRANGEMENTS: Service Details: Mr. Barnard's visiting hours will be held at the Parker Funeral Home 35 Franklin St. Lynn on Wednesday from 10:00 — 11:30 AM. A celebration of his life will follow at 11:30 AM, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
