Katherine Shelburne, 51

Byfield, MA — Katherine Hughes Shelburne, 51, passed away on February 28, 2013, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Katherine was the beloved wife of Eric (Rick) Shelburne, an accomplished cabinet maker and entrepreneur, who passed away June 2003 as a result of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig Disease).

Their marriage was an extremely happy one, and they left three beautiful children: Caitlin Shelburne, 22, a graduate of the University of Vermont and a teacher in Lawrence; Kelly Shelburne, 19, a student at Stonehill College; and Alec Shelburne, 16, a student at Pingree School.

In addition to being a loving mother, Katherine was a graduate of Canterbury School, New Milford, Conn., and Trinity College in Burlington, Vt. In addition to her love for her husband and children, she was devoted to the cause of curing ALS.

Katherine will be remembered for her beauty, her love for her husband and her children, her happy and luminous disposition, and the bravery she demonstrated in confronting the premature death of her husband and her own cancer.

Also surviving are her mother, Mary Kelly Hughes of Millbrook, N.Y.; her brothers, John Hughes Jr. of White Plains, N.Y., and Thomas Hughes of Rutland, Vt.; and her sisters, Patricia Barnes of Mendham, N.J., and Kelly Hughes of Sharon, Conn.
