Rolande E. Gagnon, 88

Newburyport — Rolande E. (Cote) Gagnon, 88, of Newburyport, formerly of Amesbury, Mass., passed away on Friday morning, September 20, at the Merrimac Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Amesbury on June 11, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Eva (Vaillancourt) Cote. She was the wife of the late Edmund Joseph Gagnon, to whom she was married for 57 years. She is survived by her twin daughters, Denise Muise and husband, David Muise of Bradford, Mass., and Deborah Folsom and husband, Jeffrey Folsom of Amesbury; her cherished grandsons, Andrew Crawshaw of Seattle, Wash., Kyle Crawshaw of Boston, Alexander Folsom and Gregory Folsom, both of Amesbury; her brother, Francis Cote of Amesbury; and her sister, Doris Ouellett of Amesbury. She is predeceased by her sisters, Cecile Roy and Bertha Pouliot; and her brother, Raoul Cote.

She was devoted to her family and took great pleasure being in her home, enjoying the simple things in life, and enjoyed family gatherings around the holidays. One of her greatest joys was taking care of her grandsons. She was affectionately known as their “Memere,” always so proud and boasting constantly about them. Her pasttimes included taking care of her flower and vegetable gardens, family camping trips, and knitting and sewing for many years. Years ago, she enjoyed speaking fluently in French Canadian with her mother, Eva, and mother-in-law, Annie. She was a very religious person and was a longtime member of the former St. Louis De Gonzague Church in Newburyport, and later attended the Immaculate Conception Church.

Before she married, she worked at Hytron, formerly located in Newburyport. After getting married, she became a homemaker, daycare provider, and went on to work at Stride Rite Shoe. In her retirement years, she treasured the opportunity to babysit her grandsons. Caring for Denise and Dave’s dogs, Danny and Lucy, provided her with companionship, especially after her husband’s passing. She volunteered her time for several years knitting newborn baby hats for the Anna Jaques Hospital.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her funeral Mass on Wednesday, September 25, at 10:30 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church, Green Street, in Newburyport. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, also in Newburyport. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, September 24, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Conte Twomey and Leblanc Funeral Home, 193 High Street, Newburyport. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice House, 360 North Ave., Haverhill, MA 01830
