Salisbury, MA — Our family’s beautiful matriarch, Alyce Birchall Mahoney, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2013, at her daughter Sheryl’s home on Salisbury Beach. Serendipitously, her beloved husband, James F. Mahoney, Sr., passed away nine years to the day. We find great comfort in knowing that James and Alyce are happily reunited with their much loved daughter, Sheila Mahoney Cook.
Alyce was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on February 14, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Dorathea A. Birchall. Alyce was raised and educated in Lawrence, Mass., and graduated Lawrence High School, Class of 1939. She and her family moved to Salem, N.H., in 1955. Forever on the go, Alyce was an avid traveler, especially her annual trips to Ireland with her husband. How she enjoyed sharing her love of Ireland with her family and how proud she was of her Irish heritage. Like most Lawrencians, vacationing on Salisbury Beach with her family was an annual event. Her later years were spent living on that same beach with her daughter Sheryl, son in law Rickey and beloved pug Zoe. These were happy times and she cherished them greatly.
Alyce is survived by her loving daughter, Sheryl Mahoney Quinn, wife of Richard E. Quinn of Salisbury, Mass.; son in law, James P. Cook and his wife Anne M. Cook, of Salem, N.H.; granddaughters, Bridget Quinn Grella; her daughters, Quinn A. and Riochai E. of Methuen, Mass., Sarah R. Cook and her children Sheelagh R. and Sean P. of Salisbury, Mass.; Bridie D. Quinn and her spouse, Joy N. Young of Seabrook, N.H.; Siobhan M. Atwood, wife of Robert E. Atwood; their children Jillian M. and Braeden X. of Haverhill, Mass.
She is also survived by her son James F. Mahoney Jr., of Galway, Ireland; grandson, James F. Mahoney III, and his wife, Cindy and their daughter Kylie of Hudson, N.H.; granddaughter, Maureen A. McLeod, wife of James F. McLeod and their children Brittany and Tyler of Methuen, Mass.; nieces, Bernadine M. Blaine and her companion, Jerry McGraw Jr.; Deborah J. Littell and her husband, Ralph; Robin Homsey-Blaine; nephew, Dan E. Blaine and his wife, Mary; great-nephews, William (Scott) Blaine and his wife, Doreen, Eric (Ricky) Blaine and his wife Jacqueline; and Danny Blaine.
