Winifred A. (Hall) Carroll of Newburyport died peacefully on February 5, 2012 at the Anna Jaques Hospital.
She was the beloved wife of the late Charles A. Carroll, to whom she was married for 71 years. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on September 24, 1913, to Austin B. Hall and Margaret (McGowan) Hall, she moved to Newburyport when she was ten years old. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception School when it had 9 grades, and then attended Newburyport High School when it was housed in the old Putnam Free School building.
She took a summer job at a local shoe shop, but did not return to school because of the need to help her family at the start of the Great Depression. On July 2, 1932 she married Charles A. Carroll, and they had four children; Charles A. Carroll, Nancy J. Ferrick, James D. Carroll, and Joan M. Rogers. After raising her children, she returned to work as a cook at Newburyport High School, where she worked for 20 years, retiring as Head Cook.
She was very proud of her cooking skills, and took special pride in baking and decorating birthday cakes and pies for her family over many years. In addition to her four children, she leaves 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband and her four sisters; Margaret Adams, Agnes Tarbox, Mary Shea, and Edna Finnegan.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral arrangements will be private, for her immediate family, with interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newburyport. Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
