Amesbury, MA — Mary Julia (Doyle) Dolan, 83, passed peacefully on March 16, 2014, at the Hyder Family Hospice House surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.
Born on April 27, 1930, in Chelsea, Mass., Mary was the daughter of the late Robert and Florence (Lee) Doyle. Mary is survived by her husband, Charles “Bud” Dolan. Mary and Bud were planning to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary in May.
Mary returned to school after raising her family and earned a Master of Education from Antioch College. She founded the first Social Day Support Program while working with Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) to meet the special needs of senior citizens isolated from the community. She described the program as “providing accepting attitudes and an atmosphere of caring to provide an affirmation of the dignity of our senior citizens.”
Mary also founded the RUACH Program in Lynn, one of the longest running televised programs on the local cable channel. RUACH stands for Religious Understanding and Community Harmony. The program provided a forum for people of different faiths to discuss their beliefs in an open and supportive environment to promote understanding and tolerance.
Above all, Mary took pride in her family. She spent countless hours with her children and grandchildren, playing in the sand and building sandcastles on the beach. She taught everyone around her to appreciate the little things and to embrace the possibilities in life. Her family and friends will always treasure her positive outlook and sense of humor. Mary has always been just a phone call away for everyone who needed a listening ear, words of encouragement or support.
In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her sister, Roberta and husband, Robert Hamel of New Port Richey, Fla.; her daughter, Charlene K. Dolan and husband, John MacDonald, III of Amesbury; her son, Charles H. Dolan Jr. and wife, Carolyn Blaydes of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, include Charlene MacDonald and husband, Shawn Martin of Washington, D.C.; Julia and Marion Dolan of Arlington, Va.; John MacDonald, IV and his future wife, Laura Hester; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Michael Doyle and Katherine Lee.
