West Newbury — Richard E. Foley, 77, longtime resident of Newburyport and West Newbury, died on Wednesday evening, August 14, 2013, at Haverhill Crossings, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.
Born in Newburyport on August 23, 1935, he was the son of the late William and Mabel (Colby) Foley. He was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1953.
After graduating, Richard served with the U.S. Air Force for four years, and after his honorable discharge, he was employed by New England Tel & Tel as a lineman until his retirement. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
Mr. Foley also served as City Councilor for Ward 5 for the City of Newburyport.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Gail K. (McGrath) Foley of West Newbury; his daughter, Paula Hatfield of Atkinson, N.H.; a grandson, Joel Hatfield of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, Robert Foley and wife, Ramona, of Newburyport, and William Foley and wife, Patricia, of Newbury; a sister, Eleanor Poirier of New Jersey; two stepchildren, Michael Costello and wife, Catherine, and Katie Maguire, all of West Newbury; five step-grandchildren, Jonathan, Sarah and James Costello, and Jennifer and Robert Maguire; a great-granddaughter, Calla; a great-grandson, Boston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In his spare time, he was a pilot and loved flying his airplane out of Plum Island, along with gardening and traveling with his wife, especially to Arizona. One of his greatest pleasures in life was spending time with his family.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, immediately followed by services at the funeral home at 6 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472, or to the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, 63 Elm St., Salisbury, MA 01952.
