Amesbury, MA — Gilbert R. Cartier, 84, of Amesbury, MA, died peacefully on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at the Amesbury Village Nursing Home in Amesbury, MA. To whom we are especially grateful for the outstanding care they provided during his final days. Gil was born June 20, 1929, in Haverhill MA. He was the son of the late Arthur and Miranda (Gilbert) Cartier. Gil graduated from Haverhill Trade School in 1947. He was a Radio Operator on the USS CalooSahatchee and USS Vulcan. Gil married M. Rita Bourque on November 24, 1951. Gil worked at Lucent Technology in N. Andover, MA, (formerly Western Electric and AT&T), retiring in 1989. After retirement, Gil’s passion was working with stained glass, along with his friend, Ray, and teaching his daughter, Michele. Gil was a member of the Amesbury Lions Club, Boosters Club, Citizens Football Committee giving his time abundantly in numerous capacities for those organizations. He also received many awards for his dedication, most notably for his 50 years of service to the Amesbury Football Banquet Committee in 2012 and honored by Mayor Thatcher Keezer. He was a great mentor and respected by many of the young members for his guidance and gentle and caring ways. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, singing in the choir and volunteering for 47 years. After the closing of Sacred Heart he became a member of the Holy Family Parish on Sparhawk St., Amesbury, MA, for 15 years. Gil and his wife, Rita, loved to travel, go to the theatre, and danced together as if they were the only couple on the dance floor. Gil and Rita and their children spent summers growing up on Province Lake in Wakefield, NH at their summer camp. Gil loved his family unconditionally and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gil and Rita enjoyed participating in and attending all of the sporting events of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gil is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, M. Rita (Bourque) Cartier; two sons, Mark Cartier and wife, GayLynn, of NH, Gilbert P. Cartier of MA; and one daughter, Michele A. Cartier of MA. Grandchildren, John Paul Cartier and wife, Rachel, of AZ, Lauren Kolodziej and husband, Pete, of NH, Leah Cartier of MA, Chad Cartier and wife, Jessica, of CT, Cory Cartier of MD, Amber Cartier of MA, Adam Bragg of MA, Marc Bragg of NH. Great-grandchildren, Nathan Cartier of MA, Molli Aquaro of MA, Landon Cartier of AZ. Gil is survived by one brother, Philip G. Cartier of Haverhill, MA. Gil was predeceased by siblings, Beatrice Lebor, Ernest Cartier, Roland Cartier, Sr., Albert Cartier, and Rita Belleville. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews, and best friends, Ray and Carmen Hunt.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass for Gil will be celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Family Parish Church, 2 School St. in Amesbury followed by burial in the St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St. in Amesbury are Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 4-8 p.m. The Amesbury Lions Club will meet at the funeral home at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Amesbury Lions Club, P.O.
