NEWBURYPORT — Rita McDonald, most recently a resident of Atria Merrimack Place in Newburyport, died at Masconomet Healthcare on Saturday.
Born in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, she lived in the city for most of her 85 years. One of nine siblings, after graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School she worked for Frigidaire, Filene's and the Boston School Department. She was the wife of the late William McDonald and mother of Billy McDonald, who died in 1980 and Mary McDonald and her husband Jim Supple of Newbury.
Rita lived in West Roxbury for much of her adult life, then lived in Plymouth and Newburyport when her grandchildren Lydia, Alexander, Christopher and Evan Supple were young. She moved back to the city in her retirement and lived for many years at Beacon House behind the State House amidst the many Suffolk students and Mass General employees she adored. A tireless volunteer at Mass General's chaplain's office, St. Joseph's Church and Rogerson Communities she only left the city when her health declined but she picked up the threads of community again at Immaculate Conception and reading with the kids at the Bresnahan School.
