Newburyport, MA — C. Bruce Brown, age 75, longtime Newburyport resident and City Councilor, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at Country Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport, with his family by his side.
Born in Olean, New York, June 9, 1937, he was the son of the late Woodrow and Doris (Lanphere) Brown and was a graduate of Oswayo,High School in Shinglehouse, PA. After graduating from high school, Bruce entered the military, serving with the United States Air Force from August 9, 1955 until his honorable discharge on October 8, 1959. He attended the University of New Hampshire following military service.
Mr. Brown was a Special Education teacher at Amesbury High School as well as a Basketball Coach. For many years he ran his own advertising agency in Newburyport.
An active member of the Newburyport community, he was Chairman of the 1982 Yankee Homecoming; Director of the Haverhill Y. M..C. A., longtime advocate and supporter of the Jimmy Fund, member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Newburyport Lions Club and St. John’s Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Newburyport. He also proudly served the City of Newburyport as Councilor for more than a decade.
His survivors include his wife, Peggy L. (Kennedy) Brown of Newburyport; three children, U.S. Senator, Scott P. Brown and wife Gail of Wrentham; Robyn L. Brown of Scarborough, ME and Bruce Browne and wife Michelle of Wolcott, CT; two step-children, Tracy Harrington and husband Christian of Amesbury and Todd Harrington and wife Amy of Bennington, VT; a sister, Linda L. Dixon of Newark, NY; along with eight grandchildren, Joshua Heath and wife Jennifer of Erie, PA; Emily Heath of Midvale, UT; Kyle Turin; Ayla Brown of Nashville, TN; Arianna Brown of MD; Gabriella Browne of NH; Parker and Devin Browne of Wolcott, CT; and Taylor Harrington of Bennington, VT; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and dear friends.
