Newburyport — Martha Jane (Glasener) Croft, 92, of Newburyport, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at her home. She was born Nov. 22, 1920 in Orrville, Ohio, daughter of Guy H. and Maude Glasener. She received her RN training at Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio, and served as a Navy nurse on active duty from April 1944 until July 1946, caring for the wounded returning from the Pacific Theater.
She married Wilfred F. Croft on June 26, 1946. They resided in Southington and Farmington, Conn. She received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Hartford College in 1955. In 1958, she received a Master of Arts in education from Trinity College, and taught elementary school in Southington, Farmington and New Britain, Conn. She received a Master of Science in library science in 1971 from Southern Connecticut State University. She was employed as librarian at Stanley School in New Britain, and was the associate librarian in charge of the Federal Depository Library at Central Connecticut State University.
Martha was an avid reader with a special love of poetry. She enjoyed watching birds and the ever-changing conditions in Newburyport harbor.
Martha was predeceased by Wil Croft, her husband of 54 years, in February, 2000. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Bill Enichen of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Barbara and Steve Hawley of Newburyport; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; Anthony Hawley and his wife, Rebecca Fischer and their daughters, Oriana and Ilaria, Vincent Wil Hawley, and Angelina Hawley-Dolan and her husband, Christopher Dolan.
