Amesbury — Gertrude Eaton, age 97, of Amesbury, former longtime resident of Newburyport, died Tuesday morning, January 22, 2013 at the Brigham Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport. She was the lifelong companion of the late Harold “Snooky” Abraham.
Born in Newburyport, May 9, 1915, she was one of five children of the late Stephen and Gertrude (Smith) Eaton and had attended schools in Newburyport. For many years she worked in the local shoe shops. Gert was a former member of the Peoples United Methodist Church of Newburyport.
Predeceased by her brothers, Charles “Gunner” Smith, George K. Eaton and John A. Eaton, Sr., she is survived by her brother, William Eaton and wife, Beverly, along with their children, Jackie Whipple, Wendy Joles and daughter Katie; and Michelle Leffer and her children, Andrew and Lindsey all of Connecticut. She also leaves behind a nephew, John A. Eaton, Jr. and wife, Marilyn, and their children, Darlene Reynolds, who has two sons, Craig and Brian; and Julie Lovejoy; a niece, Joan Shook and husband Karl and their children, Karl T. Jr., and son Liam; and Jean McCarthy and husband, Kevin and their children, Jack and Alex. Jean McCarthy was not only Gert’s grandniece, but also her devoted caregiver, spending countless hours caring for her over the years.
Gert was a resident of the the Elizabeth Calsey House in Amesbury for almost nine years, where she truly felt at home and received wonderful care.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, will be Saturday, January 26, at 12 p.m. followed by interment in Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport. By request of the family, there will be no visiting hours.
