Althea Cynewski, 48

Amesbury — Althea (Moore) Cynewski, of Amesbury, passed away Saturday, after a valiant battle against ovarian cancer. She always fought with dignity and a sense of humor, supported by her loving family and friends, who will miss her tremendously.

Althea was born in Danvers, the daughter of Barbara D. Moore and the late David E. Moore. She grew up in Amesbury and graduated from A.H.S. with the class of 1982. She then went on to attend Fitchburg State College where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

After graduating from college, Althea married her high school sweetheart and soul mate, Steven, son of Norman and Lorraine Cynewski. Their son, Jared, was born in 1989, followed by their second son, Jordan, in 1997. This completed their beautiful family, which was Althea's pride and joy.

For many years, Althea was employed by Market Basket supermarkets where she was an office manager. In 1998, following her true passion, she began her career as a teacher's assistant at the Cashman Elementary School in Amesbury. While there, she was involved in many activities and committees, but is probably best-remembered for her famous end-of-year photo slide shows which captured the events of the school year for all to enjoy.

Althea had a variety of interests, including reading, gardening, traveling, and bowling. She was a member of the Monday Night Lena's Bowling League for 20 years. She was also an avid and vocal supporter of all the professional Boston sports teams. Althea strongly believed in serving and giving back to her community. She participated in local government as an Amesbury Town Meeting member and served as Luminara Co-chair for Amesbury's Relay for Life Committee, a cause which was particularly close to her heart.

In addition to her devoted husband Steven, and sons, Jared and Jordan, she leaves behind her mother, Barbara and stepfather, Richard Goodrich of Florida; her brother, Matthew Moore and his wife, Misako of Newmarket, N.H.; her sister, Stephanie Schwechheimer and her husband, William of Amesbury; her father and mother-in-law, Norman and Lorraine Cynewski of Amesbury; brother-in-law, Norman Cynewski and wife, Mae of Plaistow, N.H.; her sister-in-law, Debra and her husband, Mark Hutchinson of Amesbury, along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her family, she will also be missed by her book club sisters, her Amesbury Industrial Supply family, her Cashman School family and her students whom she loved like her own family. Her family would like to thank the talented and dedicated staff of the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, particularly Dr. Neela Natarajan, Jacqueline Martin, RN and Sharon DiGregorio, RN. The family also thanks the community of Amesbury, for the incredible outpouring of love and support during Althea's illness.
