Rosalie "Lee" (Fairman) Jones, 80

Byfield — Rosalie “Lee” Jones, 80, passed away early Thursday morning, November 15, in her home. She was the wife of the late Lawrence Lakin Jones Jr., to whom she had been married for 61 years.

Lee was born in Stafford Springs, Conn. on August 23, 1932, the daughter of the late Katherine Ingalls and George Willard Fairman. She attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

A mother of six children, Lee was an avid reader and gardener, and savored summers vacationing at her family’s getaway on Jolly Island on Lake Winnepesaukee, N.H.

Lee dedicated her professional career to educating young children through YWCA camps, self-operated summer camps, and an in-home kindergarten. But she will be most remembered for her role as director of Creative Playhouse, a preschool dedicated to creative learning that she operated out of her Byfield home for 44 years. She touched the lives of more than 900 children in Byfield and surrounding towns with her nature-inspired craft projects and nurturing learning environment. She retired in June, shortly before her 80th birthday.

She is survived by her children, sons, Stephen T. Jones of Merrimac, Lawrence Lakin Jones III of Wilmington, Del., and Andrew Fairman Jones of Lee, N.H.; also daughters Jennifer Baldwin-Shaffer of LI, N.Y., and Elizabeth Jones Burgess of Rockport, Maine. She was guardian for her grandson, Matthew A. Jones of Groveland. She leaves sisters Katherine Eaton of Wolfeboro, N.H. and Judith Rhome of Brewster, Mass; and brother Charles Fairman of Bedford, NH. She leaves 17 other grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Lakin Jones Jr., daughter Deborah Forster Jones of Newburyport, sister Faith Conrad of Beverly, Mass, and brother J. Raymond Fairman of Granby, Conn.
