West Newbury — Shirley H. (Sawyer) Burrill, longtime West Newbury resident, died peacefully on Monday evening, November 19, 2012 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly.
Born in West Newbury on August 30, 1921, Shirley was the only child of the late John S. and Margaret R. (Stevens) Sawyer and was a graduate of the West Newbury High School, Class of 1939.
Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her passion in life was her family. She proudly raised her children, instilling in them the importance of family values. She could not have been any prouder of her children, other than the pride she had for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Everyone was welcomed at her home and she was always prepared to feed a crowd, loving every minute of it. Shirley was also actively involved with the West Newbury Council on Aging for many years.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years, Leonard R. Burrill, who died May 3, 2010, she leaves behind five children, John A. Burrill and wife, Sharon of Pawtucket, R.I., Sally B. Torell and husband, Edgar of Wilmington, Polly Burrill of Fishkill, N.Y., Martha St. Jean and husband, Peter of Hampstead, N.H., and Jay H. Burrill and wife, Sharon of Danvers; twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchidlren, several generations of nieces and nephews and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, Shirley was predeceased by two sons, Peter S. Burrill and Mark L. Burrill.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be Saturday, December 1, from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury immediately followed by a memorial service at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Interment in Walnut Hill Cemetery, West Newbury will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers, MA 01923.
