Dr. John Howard, 91
San Diego, CA — Dr. John William Howard (Jack) went to his heavenly home on April 4, 2013. He was born to William Nelson and Ruth LaRue Howard in Bloomington, Ill., on October 24, 1921, and grew up in Glens Falls, N.Y. Jack attended Green Mountain Junior College in Vermont where he decided to study medicine. While in college, he learned to fly from a snow covered cow pasture on skis. He enlisted in the Navy and graduated from Albany Medical School in Albany, N.Y. After medical school he was stationed in China and Japan before he married his best girl, Jane Harris Daily on October 18, 1947. Their family quickly grew to include three daughters, Alyson, Daily and Tracy. With the exception of two years in Korea, when the girls were toddlers, being a Navy surgeon allowed him to travel with his family worldwide. His Naval career and interest in others provided Jack with a vast collection of amazing stories his friends and family have delighted in hearing for years. In 1970, after 30 years in the Navy he retired aboard the USS Constitution, ”Old Ironsides”, in Boston Harbor. Following his retirement he was in private orthopedic practice at the Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass., followed by a stint, as a Civilian Surgeon for the Air Force. In 1984 at age 63, when most folks settle into their comfortable surroundings, he had an opportunity for one last move with Jane to San Diego. He was a teaching surgeon at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego until his 65th birthday, in 1986. Jack received many awards and commendations in his lifetime, but his most treasured possession was his family and he will be greatly missed by us.
