Wooden nickels worth something now

To the editor:

The saying used to be "Don't take any wooden nickels." Now it's the thing to do.

I have two wooden nickels. "Good luck pieces from Yankee Homecoming. July 27 to Aug. 4, 1963, Newburyport, Mass." The front shows a buffalo encircled with the words "Wooden Nickel United States of America."

The second one is about 1 1/2 inches across, has the picture of an Indian on the front with the words "Wooden Nickel" above it. The back is inscribed with "Yankee Homecoming, Haydn's Pharmacy 1971."

As I remember it, these were just souvenirs, good luck pieces. You didn't have to buy them. This year they're adding a bill that will have monetary value.

How times change!
