To the editor :
It’s time to put the COWs out to pasture and let the NRA finish the job the group was appointed to do over 40 years ago and then hopefully they can ride off into the sunset.
My opinions and comments come after 50-odd years on Newburyport’s waterfront within a stone’s throw of the NRA land. After reading the many embellished and exaggerated letters and news articles written over the years about the NRA’s land I needed to respond.
The boardwalk, ways to the waterfront, berm, bench areas and performance area, most of the grassy areas and the parking lots will have public access forever. That is, unless an act of Congress changes it and we all know that will never happen.
Parking is really only a problem on our waterfront during Yankee Homecoming and then only a few days/nights.
We have the Waterfront Trust, the Harbor Commission, the City Council/mayor, the Harbormaster Department and six or so different citizen groups with lots of lawyers to insure your public rights/access to Newburyport’s Waterfront Park. Let’s finish what was started over 40 years ago!
The taxpayers of this city deserve some relief in paying all the repair/maintenance/upkeep expenses to keep this area beautiful for all to enjoy.
